Distinguished and Famous people from Swan Hill
🎨 Lorraine Connelly-Northey
Lorraine Connelly-Northey was born at Swan Hill in 1962 and developed an artistic practice drawing on Waradgerie cultural history and the landscapes of her childhood. Bags, containers and other forms associated with carrying and gathering appear throughout her sculptural work. Public collections and major exhibitions have brought those ideas to a national audience. The Mallee and Riverina are important influences, making her relationship with the region part of the work's substance. Her career connects Swan Hill with contemporary First Nations art through both biography and the materials and forms she explores.
🧶 Bevan and Letty Nicholls
Bevan and Letty Nicholls helped make Swan Hill a stronger home for Aboriginal families. Their work ranged from community events and Christmas celebrations to seeking funding and improving access to essential services. Letty worked as an Aboriginal liaison officer at the hospital and became known for Ngarrindjeri weaving and feather craft. Bevan shared cultural knowledge with visitors and school groups at the Pioneer Settlement. Recognised together in the Victorian Aboriginal Honour Roll in 2025, they represent a form of local distinction built through sustained care, practical organisation and the passing on of skills.
